yellow bloomsIf you are looking for a tough orchid, the Phalaenopsis orchid is the one for you. Phalaenopsis orchids are known for their ability to withstand a bit of neglect, but they still require good care. Beginner orchid owners often choose Phalaenopsis orchids, which are also called “Phals” or “moth orchids”.

Here are some basic rules to follow when it comes to owning a Phalaenopsis orchid:

  • Do not leave water on the leaves or in the crown.
  • Do not leave water in the bottom of the decorative pot or you may experience root rot.
  • Just Add Ice recommends adding three ice cubes once a week as the perfect way of keeping your Phalaenopsis orchid properly watered.
  • Never let the Phalaenopsis orchid dry out completely. Check the roots to see if they are gray or white in color. This indicates the plant is in need of more water.
  • Phalaenopsis orchids prefer growing in bright, yet shady areas. Do not place them in direct sunlight as the plants can quickly burn. Darkness is also bad for a Phal. The rule of thumb is, if the lighting is good enough to read a book, then it is good enough for a Phalaenopsis orchid.
  • Phalaenopsis orchids don’t like cold temperatures. If it is warm enough for people to comfortably live in, then it is warm enough for an orchid too.
  • Regular fertilizer will benefit a Phalaenopsis orchid.
  • Phalaenopsis orchids thrive living in small spaces but they do need repotting about every two years.
