i bought my 1st just add ice orchid and it was beautiful for ever so long my husband started bragging about how beautiful it was and it don't have any more blooms on it and i can not seem to get it to bloom again but i think it needs to be repoted........ what can i repot this flower with???????? please help//////////
Posted @ Sunday, May 23, 2010 11:07 AM by Tammy
Tammy,

Repotting is typically not necessary for at least a year. When it comes time to repot, look for a potting soil that is specific to orchids and it should be composed to bark and moss. This can be found at retailers that sell orchids or orchid supplies.

Also check our repotting care page: http://www.justaddiceorchids.com/repotting
Posted @ Monday, May 24, 2010 7:57 AM by Just Add Ice Support
The roots coming out of the soil are called "air roots" and they help collect moisture and carbon dioxide from the air. These roots can remain outside the soil. As for repotting, see our repotting care page.

For answering any of our orchid trivia questions, you'll want to post your answer in the comments area of that specific question. Here's the most recent one: Orchid Trivia Question #3.

Barbara,

For a step by step explanation of how to repot your Just Add Ice Orchid please visit: care page for repotting.

Since orchids hate to sit in water, repot in a container with drainage holes.
Posted @ Monday, May 24, 2010 8:09 AM by Just Add Ice Support
Annette,

You can cut the flower spike back to a "node", a triangular shaped area on the stem, which may encourage the Just Add Ice Orchid to generate new side flower spikes.
Posted @ Monday, May 24, 2010 8:11 AM by Just Add Ice Support
Cynthia,

Just Add Ice Orchids are very sensitive to temperature changes, so by exposing it to a cooler night time temperature for a month will help induce flowering. Make sure to continue keeping it in indirect-sunlight as well.

Sure wish i could submit a photo,to win one, it's not working. Love all orchids. I have 11 so far. Some flower in the winter and some in the spring / summer. I'm still learning, there's more to just the right light and watering.
Posted @ Tuesday, June 08, 2010 8:22 AM by Victoria m. Brack
The correct answer is: C) Carolus Linnaeus

Linnaeus gave it the genus Phalaenopsis in reference to the genus Phalaena, which is the name of a group of large moths.

I purchased one of your orchids and did exactly as your instructions say do. I got up this morning and all of the leaves fell off at the roots. I am so upset. I don't know what happened but I can not afford to purchase another one and risk this happening again.

I GOT MY ICEORCHID ON VALENTINE'S DAY AND LOVE IT.
Posted @ Tuesday, June 22, 2010 9:01 AM by kris
Robin,
If the leaves that have fallen off are closest to the roots, it is most likely a natural process by the plant to discard mature leaves and produce new ones.

I just purchased my first Orchid today and it is beautiful. I have always been afraid of them for I never do well with house plants. I seem to almost always over water or under water my plants. But 3 ice cubes a week...I don't see how I can possibly under or over do that! I will keep you imformed.

First time I have had good luck with orchids and usually anything I plant or grow in a pot does extermely well and I am so happy with my orchid I daughter gave me for Mothers Day.

When do I need to feed my orchid? And what type of food is good for it?
Posted @ Thursday, July 15, 2010 4:02 PM by Jinx B
Jinx,
Once your orchid has finished flowering, fertilize at least once a month or once every other week. Use a balanced houseplant fertilizer at 1/2 the recommended strength. For more information on fertilizing your Just Add Ice Orchid, please visit "Trigger Orchid Re-Blooming" on the website.

I have four of your lovely orchids. Two of them have quit blooming and both have lost a stem. Should I cut the other ones since they show no sign of new blooms?

Posted @ Tuesday, July 20, 2010 5:46 PM by Janet
Janet,
You have 3 options on how to care for bare flower spikes. You can take the wait and see approach, trim the flower spike back to a node, or remove the entire flower spike an inch from the base of the plant. For more information, you may want to check out "Cutting Orchid Stems" on the website: http://www.justaddiceorchids.com/orchid-care-cutting-stems.

With proper care, your orchid will most likely produce a flower spike during the fall or winter. Keep up the good work!

I have four ice orchids and the flowers have all fallen. The leaves on two are starting to get brown. What can I do to make them healthy and strong so that we can delight with the blooms? Also are the roots suppose to be exposed? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!
Posted @ Monday, October 18, 2010 12:08 PM by Norma
Norma,
Be sure to empty any extra water in the bottom of the decorative pot after each watering, as orchid roots should not sit in excess water. Also, place your orchid in an environment with bright, indirect sunlight. Yes, it is normal for some of the orchid roots to be exposed. Since your orchid has finished blooming, you may want to check out "Cutting Orchid Stems" and "Trigger Orchid Re-Blooming" on the website.
