Orchid Close UpAs an orchid grower, it is helpful to carry knowledge about orchids so here are a few tips on terms to make you sound orchid savvy.

  • Column – the tiny, rounded, column-like extension between the two largest petals. This little guy is the central reproductive organ of the orchid flower
  • Inflorescence – the flowering part of a plant
  • Keiki – a small plant growing from a node on the flower stem
  • Lip – the part of the flower that is almost completely divided from the rest of the flower, however, it is connected by the column. The lip is specialized to aid in pollination
  • Medium – the material added to an orchid’s container, which can range from varieties such as soil to bark
  • Node – A distinct joint or notch on the inflorescence from which a secondary flower stem can emerge from after the primary inflorescence has finished blooming
  • Sepal – the outer segments on an orchid flower. Similar to petals, sepals are the three smaller segments of the flower that create a triangular shape
  • Spike – a flower stalk
  • Throat – the inner portion of a tubular orchid lip, often quite colorful
  • Yellowing – term used when a leaf is literally yellowing, which indicates an issue with the orchid

Pop quiz! What’s a keiki? If you guessed right without peeking, then your brain can store information like a pseudobulb stores water!

I have no more blooms...now what?

I want to share my experience so far with my first orchid. I received it on Mothers Day '09.

It bloomed for almost 2 months with my watering with ice cubes.

Then the spike turned brown so I cut it off. Winter was a little iffy but the leaves were green until Feb 2010 when they shriveled up and one by one turned yellow. Ocassionally a new leave would emerge from the center of the plant.

Now in April I see 6 new roots pointing up and one new leave from the center which is split open so I can see into it a little bit. Is this where a new spike will come from?

I hope it keeps growing. I read this website often and have enjoyed learning about orchids.

I have hard water. How will it (ice cubes) effect my orchid plant? See no "contact us" available on this web site. Await someone's response.

Viv,
Hard water contains higher levels of calcium, which over time can build up in the soil. Every 3 months, soak your orchid in water for around 2 minutes. Be sure to let the water completely leach out of the pot before placing it in the outer/decorative container, because orchids hate to sit in water. You may begin using the 3 ice cube watering method when the roots turn white/grayish, which may take up to 8-10 days.
